Esther Rose Parkes has recently released her first album “The Other Country” produced in Sweden by American Blues musician Brian Kramer. Her work is not easy to pigeonhole, influenced as it is by the complex geography of her life and the tributaries that feed into her voice and the sense that it carries of these shadow countries. “The Other Country” has received positive reviews by not only UK Folk Radio and UK Fatea Magazine but many others. Her songs have been played Europe-wide on British, French and Scandinavian radio stations amongst others. She is currently working on her second album with a new line-up of musicians and arrangements, exploring a variety of styles with a dynamic that is markedly different to “The Other Country”.
The Other Country was recorded in Stockholm in November 2012. Produced by blues guitarist Brian Kramer it was one of those magical experiences where the album came together in five days at the end of a six year journey.
I thank Brian Kramer not only for his musicianship and vision, but also for his ability to inspire.
These songs enact a search, a yearning to belong, to encounter and inhabit a soul-scape. This is I believe a quest that most listeners growing up in today’s world of disenfranchisement and alienation will quickly recognise. There are no simple endings here, but there is much that speaks of holding true and resisting the things which denigrate the true passions of who we are.
